Monthly Staff Picks | June, 2026

June 2, 2026 Clare Brooks

Little Village Toy & Book Shop’s Monthly Staff Picks for June are here!

As you may have seen last month, the Pulitzer Prize-winning ‘Angel Down’ kicked things off a little earlier in May than expected but will continue as one of our Adult picks throughout June, too.

We’ve added an additional Adult title this month with ‘Ducks, Newburyport’ by Lucy Ellmann; another title that plays with form and function, like ‘Angel Down’, but in an entirely different setting. This Booker Prize shortlisted tome of a novel follows an American housewife’s stream of consciousness in a not-too-distant Ohio; it’s an ambitious but worthwhile effort for the author and readers alike.

Our Middle Reader and Picture Book Picks this month are a delightful pair with Katherine Applegate’s ‘Odder’ & ‘Odder: An Otter's Story’. ‘Odder’, for middle readers, is the bestselling novel told in verse that follows a remarkable otter off the coast of central California. ‘Odder: An Otter’s Story’ is a picture book adaptation of the novel sure to delight readers young and old. Both versions of this heartwarming tale inspired by the true story of a Monterey Bay Aquarium Program feature gorgeous illustrations from Charles Santoso.

And last but certainly not least, our YA selection this month is ‘Encore!’ (available 6/2). This queer graphic novel rom-com sees two former best friends reunite in high school after drifting apart during childhood.

Monthly Staff Pick | December, 2025

December 1, 2025 Clare Brooks

December’s batch of Monthly Staff Picks have arrived!

We’ve got a perfect pairing of Adult selections celebrating books this month with Keith Houston’s ‘The Book’ which chronicles the origins and evolutions of the book in this fascinating and joyous history title; plus, Helene Hanff’s classic ‘84, Charing Cross Road’ following the New York freelance writer and her decades long correspondence with a used-book dealer in London and is a heartwarming showcase of the power of books. Both of these titles make a great gift for the readers and book lovers on your holiday shopping list.

For Picture book fans this month we have ‘Charley Mouse Cleans House’ written and illustrated by Katerina Gorelik. This visual delight follows Charley, who has a love for cleanliness and order, as they set out for their week helping to clean the homes of her friends and neighbors. Full of familiar fairytale faces and plenty of little details to spot in the art, this book is cozy fun for picture book fans of all ages.

‘Anne Arrives’ is an early reader’s introduction into L.M. Montgomery’s beloved Green Gables, and our Chapter Book selection this December. This retelling of the classic following Anne Shirley features full-color illustrations and is a perfect introduction for fans old and new alike.

And finally, this month’s Young Adult pick is ‘The Reappearance of Rachel Price’. From the bestselling Holly Jackson, this mystery follows Bel and family as they agree to a true-crime documentary about the disappearance of Rachel Price only for her to come back into their lives as the cameras are rolling.

  • From #1 bestselling author of The Perfect Couple Elin Hilderbrand, and her daughter, Shelby Cunningham: the irresistible, deliciously scandalous story of one drama-filled year at a New England boarding school.

It's move-in day at Tiffin Academy and amidst the happy chaos of friends reuniting, selfies uploading, and cars unloading, shocking news arrives: America Today just ranked Tiffin the number two boarding school in the country. It's a seventeen-spot jump - was there a typo? The dorms need to be renovated, their sports teams always come in last place, and let's just say Tiffin students are known for being more social than academic. On the other hand, the campus is exquisite, class sizes are small, and the dining hall is run by an acclaimed New York chef. And they do have fun--lots of parties and school dances, and a piano man plays in the student lounge every Monday night.

But just as the rarefied air of Tiffin is suffused with self-congratulation, the wheels begin to turn - and then they fall off the bus. One by one, scandalous blind items begin to appear on phones across Tiffin's campus, thanks to a new app called ZipZap, and nobody is safe. From Davi Banerjee, international influencer and resident queen bee, to Simone Bergeron, the new and surprisingly young history teacher, to Charley Hicks, a transfer student who seems determined not to fit in, to Cordelia Spooner, Admissions Director with a somewhat idiosyncratic methodology - everyone has something to hide.

As if high school wasn't dramatic enough...As the year unfolds, bonds are forged and broken, secrets are shared and exposed, and the lives of Tiffin's students and staff are changed forever. The Academy is Elin Hilderbrand's fresh, buzzy take on boarding school life, and a thrilling new direction from one of America's most satisfying and popular storytellers.

  • In this posthumous collection of thought-provoking essays--many never published before--Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and bestselling author David McCullough affirms the value of history, how we can be guided by its lessons, and the enduring legacy of American ideals.

History Matters brings together selected essays by beloved historian David McCullough, some published here for the first time, written at different points over the course of his long career but all focused on the subject of his lifelong passion: the importance of history in understanding our present and future. Edited by McCullough's daughter, Dorie McCullough Lawson, and his longtime researcher, Michael Hill, History Matters is a tribute to a master historian and offers fresh insights into McCullough's enduring interests and writing life. The book also features a foreword by Jon Meacham.

McCullough highlights the importance of character in political leaders, with Harry Truman and George Washington serving as exemplars of American values like optimism and determination. He shares his early influences, from the books he cherished in his youth to the people who mentored him. He also pays homage to those who inspired him, such as writer Paul Horgan and painter Thomas Eakins, illustrating the diverse influences on his writing as well as the influence of art.

Rich with McCullough's signature grace, curiosity, and narrative gifts, these essays offer vital lessons in viewing history through the eyes of its participants, a perspective that McCullough believed was crucial to understanding the present as well as the past. History Matters is testament to McCullough's legacy as one of the great storytellers of this nation's history and of the lasting promise of American ideals.

  • The U.S. Constitution is among the oldest constitutions in the world but also one of the most difficult to amend. Jill Lepore, Harvard professor of history and law, explains why in We the People, the most original history of the Constitution in decades--and an essential companion to her landmark history of the United States, These Truths.

Published on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding--the anniversary, too, of the first state constitutions-- We the People offers a wholly new history of the Constitution. "One of the Constitution's founding purposes was to prevent change," Lepore writes. "Another was to allow for change without violence." Relying on the extraordinary database she has assembled at the Amendments Project, Lepore recounts centuries of attempts, mostly by ordinary Americans, to realize the promise of the Constitution. Yet nearly all those efforts have failed. Although nearly twelve thousand amendments have been introduced in Congress since 1789, and thousands more have been proposed outside its doors, only twenty-seven have ever been ratified. More troubling, the Constitution has not been meaningfully amended since 1971. Without recourse to amendment, she argues, the risk of political violence rises. So does the risk of constitutional change by presidential or judicial fiat.

Challenging both the Supreme Court's monopoly on constitutional interpretation and the flawed theory of "originalism," Lepore contends in this "gripping and unfamiliar story of our own past" that the philosophy of amendment is foundational to American constitutionalism. The framers never intended for the Constitution to be preserved, like a butterfly, under glass, Lepore argues, but expected that future generations would be forever tinkering with it, hoping to mend America by amending its Constitution through an orderly deliberative and democratic process.

Lepore's remarkable history seeks, too, to rekindle a sense of constitutional possibility. Congressman Jamie Raskin writes that Lepore "has thrown us a lifeline, a way of seeing the Constitution neither as an authoritarian straitjacket nor a foolproof magic amulet but as the arena of fierce, logical, passionate, and often deadly struggle for a more perfect union." At a time when the Constitution's vulnerability is all too evident, and the risk of political violence all too real, We the People, with its shimmering prose and pioneering research, hints at the prospects for a better constitutional future, an amended America.

  • With the awakening of fire-breathing dragons, Among the Burning Flowers sees the first sparks of danger that threaten to consume the world in The Priory of the Orange Tree.

Take your first steps into the epic.

Yscalin, land of sunshine and lavender, will soon be ablaze.

It has been centuries since the Draconic Army took wing, almost extinguishing humankind.

Marosa Vetalda is a prisoner in her own home, controlled by her cold father, King Sigoso. Over the mountains, her betrothed, Aubrecht Lievelyn, rules Mentendon in all but name. Together, they intend to usher in a better world.

A better world seems impossibly distant to Estina Melaugo, who hunts the Draconic beasts that have slept across the world for centuries.

And now the great wyrm Fýredel is stirring, and Yscalin will be the first to fall . . .

A story of human resilience in the face of dire circumstances, Among the Burning Flowers leads readers through the gripping and tragic events that pave the way for the opening of the million-copy bestseller The Priory of The Orange Tree.

Richly illustrated with magical artwork by Rovina Cai (@rovinacai).

  • The body is the most complex machine in the world, and the only one for which you cannot get a replacement part from the manufacturer. For centuries, medicine has reached for what's available--sculpting noses from brass, borrowing skin from frogs and hearts from pigs, crafting eye parts from jet canopies and breasts from petroleum by-products. Today we're attempting to grow body parts from scratch using stem cells and 3D printers. How are we doing? Are we there yet?

In Replaceable You, Mary Roach explores the remarkable advances and difficult questions prompted by the human body's failings. When and how does a person decide they'd be better off with a prosthetic than their existing limb? Can a donated heart be made to beat forever? Can an intestine provide a workable substitute for a vagina?

Roach dives in with her characteristic verve and infectious wit. Her travels take her to the OR at a legendary burn unit in Boston, a "superclean" xeno-pigsty in China, and a stem cell "hair nursery" in the San Diego tech hub. She talks with researchers and surgeons, amputees and ostomates, printers of kidneys and designers of wearable organs. She spends time in a working iron lung from the 1950s, stays up all night with recovery techs as they disassemble and reassemble a tissue donor, and travels across Mongolia with the cataract surgeons of Orbis International.

Irrepressible and accessible, Replaceable You immerses readers in the wondrous, improbable, and surreal quest to build a new you.

Ever since Harry had come home for the summer, the Dursleys had been so mean and hideous that all Harry wanted was to get back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he's packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature who says that if Harry returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike... And strike it does. For in Harry's second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck-up new professor and a spirit who haunts the girls' bathroom. But then the real trouble begins: Someone is turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects... Harry Potter himself!

  • The third book in the Harry Potter series, now in a special edition paperback with colorful stenciled edges! A must-have collectible for fans and a beautiful gift for book lovers of all ages.

For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Now he has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, "He's at Hogwarts... he's at Hogwarts." Harry Potter isn't safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his friends. Because on top of it all, there may well be a traitor in their midst.

  • The fourth book in the Harry Potter series, now in a special edition paperback with colorful stenciled edges! A must-have collectible for fans and a beautiful gift for book lovers of all ages.

Harry Potter wants to get away from the pernicious Dursleys and go to the Quidditch World Cup with Hermione, Ron, and the Weasleys. He wants to dream about Cho Chang, his crush (and maybe do more than dream). He wants to find out about the mysterious event involving two other rival schools of magic, and a competition that hasn't happened for hundreds of years. He wants to be a normal, fourteen-year-old wizard. Unfortunately for Harry Potter, he's not normal; he's different -- even by wizarding standards. And in this case, different can be deadly.

  • The fifth book in the Harry Potter series, now in a special edition paperback with colorful stenciled edges! A must-have collectible for fans and a beautiful gift for book lovers of all ages.

There is a door at the end of a silent corridor. And it's haunting Harry Potter's dreams. Why else would he be waking in the middle of the night, screaming in terror? It's not just the upcoming O.W.L. exams; a new teacher with a personality like poisoned honey; a disgruntled house-elf; or even the growing threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Now Harry Potter is faced with the unreliability of the very government of the magical world and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), he finds depth and strength in his friends beyond what even he knew, boundless loyalty, and unbearable sacrifice.

  • The sixth book in the Harry Potter series, now in a special edition paperback with colorful stenciled edges! A must-have collectible for fans and a beautiful gift for book lovers of all ages.

The war against Voldemort is not going well; even Muggle governments are noticing. Hermione scans the pages of the Daily Prophet, reading out terrible news. Dumbledore is absent from Hogwarts for long stretches of time, and the Order of the Phoenix has already suffered losses. And yet... As in all wars, life goes on. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate -- and lose a few eyebrows in the process. Teenagers flirt and fight and fall in love. Classes are tough, though Harry receives some extraordinary help from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince. And all the while Harry searches for the full and complex story of the boy who became Lord Voldemort, hoping to find what may be his only vulnerability.

  • Now available in a gorgeous Deluxe Collector's Edition featuring beautiful new cover art, special hardcover case design, illustrated endpapers, and stenciled edges--the stunning debut novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Study in Drowning.

This story of fantasy, romance, and folklore inspired by Hungarian history and Jewish mythology follows a young pagan woman with hidden powers and a one-eyed captain of the Woodsmen as they form an unlikely alliance to thwart a tyrant.

In her forest-veiled pagan village, Évike is the only woman without power, making her an outcast clearly abandoned by the gods. The villagers blame her corrupted bloodline--her father was a Yehuli man, one of the much-loathed servants of the fanatical king. When soldiers arrive from the Holy Order of Woodsmen to claim a pagan girl for the king's blood sacrifice, Évike is betrayed by her fellow villagers and surrendered.

But when monsters attack the Woodsmen and their captive en route, slaughtering everyone but Évike and the cold, one-eyed captain, they have no choice but to rely on each other. Except he's no ordinary Woodsman--he's the disgraced prince, Gáspár Bárány, whose father needs pagan magic to consolidate his power. Gáspár fears that his cruelly zealous brother plans to seize the throne and instigate a violent reign that would damn the pagans and the Yehuli alike. As the son of a reviled foreign queen, Gáspár understands what it's like to be an outcast, and he and Évike make a tenuous pact to stop his brother.

As their mission takes them from the bitter northern tundra to the smog-choked capital, their mutual loathing slowly turns to affection, bound by a shared history of alienation and oppression. However, trust can easily turn to betrayal, and as Évike reconnects with her estranged father and discovers her own hidden magic, she and Gáspár need to decide whose side they're on, and what they're willing to give up for a nation that never cared for them at all.

  • A queen destined for magic. A king cursed by love. A fate no one could outrun.

Before Selene, there was Roxilana. Discover her darkly delicious origin story in this prequel to Bewitched, a complete standalone from TikTok sensation Laura Thalassa.

He called her queen--then turned her world to ash.

Two thousand years before the rise of Henbane Coven, Roxilana was just a Roman girl trying to survive the shadows of empire. Until the day a voice begins speaking inside her head.

That voice belongs to Memnon, King of the Sarmatians--a warrior touched by gods, cursed by fate, and utterly convinced that Roxilana is his soul mate.

When Roxilana's latent powers awaken, Memnon appears at her door with a crown in one hand and destiny in the other. Before she knows it, she's swept away to a strange new land and named queen of a people she barely understands...and wife to a man whose love is as intense as it is terrifying.

Magic always demands a price. And as Roxilana learns the true cost of Memnon's power, passion, and prophecy, she must decide whether to build an empire beside her cursed king...or burn it to the ground.

Cold Cases heat up in the Naturals, a Tiktok favorite, unputdownable series with over 1 million copies sold!

Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people, piecing together the tiniest details to know who a person is, and what they want. But it's not a skill she takes seriously until the FBI come knocking--they've begun a classified program that uses exceptional teens to crack infamous cold cases, and they want her to join.

What Cassie doesn't realize is that there's more at risk than a few unsolved homicides. Sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own, she quickly realizes no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. Emotion-reader Michael is a wild card--and far too perceptive for Cassie's good. The resident deception-detector is a pathological liar, and the program's perky, blonde statistician is far better with numbers than with people. And then there's Dean--a profiler like Cassie but with a much darker gift.

When a new killer strikes, danger looms close. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Perfect for fans of Criminal Minds and Holly Jackson, Jennifer Lynn Barnes delivers a suspense-ridden psychological thriller with killer appeal, a love triangle to die for, and a gorgeous new design that will stand out on any shelf.

**Don't miss the other books in this series: Killer Instinct, All In, and Bad Blood, and the novella, Twelve

  • In this gripping YA thriller perfect for fans of Jessica Goodman and Amber Smith, two girls from opposite worlds play a dangerous game of cat and mouse when a rich classmate is murdered and they become prime suspects. The race is on to find out which one is a killer.

Sixteen-year-old amateur sleuth Roxie is shrewd, nimble, cunning, and only a little bit damaged. She also has a real knack for finding things, making her the perfect go-to detective for her rich classmates at St. Margaret when they're looking to retrieve the things they've "lost"-- no questions asked. So when queen bee Kirsten Montgomery-Wiggins pays Roxie a hefty sum to track down a mysterious blonde who "stole" her phone, Roxie accepts. Although Kirsten and Roxie have bad blood between them, Roxie could really use the cash. But that same night, Roxie finds Kirsten murdered in her mansion, and police zero in on her as a prime suspect.

On the outskirts of town in a trailer park, Inez, a part-time maid and part-time sex-worker, keeps finding blood everywhere. Crusted in her earring, threaded into her shoelace. She should really toss her shoes so there's nothing to tie her to the body. How could the night have gone so wrong? She really thought she was working her way to a better life, but now she could be headed to jail if the wrong someone puts two and two together.

Roxie doesn't know who she's looking for and Inez doesn't know who she's hiding from. But all roads seem to lead to Montgomery House, as Roxie works to clear her own name and Inez attempts to stay one step ahead of the law and the men who hurt her.

From New York Times bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes the next book in the Ember Falls series.

I've crafted my new life in Ember Falls with two simple rules: maintain superficial relationships and always be ready to run.

But when my son's incredibly hot hockey coach Miles Anderson walks in, things get very, very complicated.

With his charming smile and our accidental dates, he's the exact opposite of any man I've ever dated. That should make saying yes to being with him simple, but nothing in my life is easy.

    In fact, it's a mess.

Miles makes me smile and treats my son like his own. When we're together, I forget about my troubles and dream of a life that I will never be able to have with him.

It's only a matter of time until the past comes knocking and I'll have to leave, breaking us both in the process.

  • #1 New York Times bestselling author Jon Meacham introduces America's essential founding documents in an elegant, readable, and timeless volume.

In the winter of 1860-1861, facing the prospect of secession and civil war, President Abraham Lincoln held fast to the founding promise of the now-imperiled United States of America. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution had forged the nation, and Lincoln intended to defend them. But even more importantly, Lincoln saw "something back of these, entwining itself more closely about the human heart. That something is the principle of 'Liberty to all.'"

That principle remains as vital today as it has been throughout the first 250 years of our nation's history. Presented here with an introduction by bestselling American historian and biographer Jon Meacham, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America are both timeless and timely, offering a window into the complex poltical world of the nation's founders--and important lessons for our own. As Meacham writes, "If America is to be America, the foundational documents reprinted here must be not theoretical but tactile, not quaint but vivid, not dead but alive."
